The Starbucks cup is a favorite of many, but there’s one thing you probably won’t see on most people’s coffee lists: a cup of coffee.
The cup has been the most popular choice of all coffee-related drinks for decades.
But a new study shows that Starbucks has a long way to go before it achieves universal acceptance.
While Starbucks’ Cold Brew coffee has gained popularity since its introduction in the mid-1990s, the cup hasn’t been universally accepted by coffee drinkers.
In the study, researchers at the University of Sydney looked at whether the cup was more likely to be perceived as a coffee-like drink by a group of college students.
They asked students to rate on a scale of 1 to 5 how much they liked their Starbucks coffee.
Students were given a range of options, including the cup of a water-based drink, a cold brew, a hot brew, and a cappuccino.
Overall, nearly three-quarters of students gave their cup a “1” to “5” rating, and nearly 90% said they liked it.
“I’m definitely surprised by how little people know about Starbucks,” said senior researcher Dr Joanne D’Alton.
“It’s really a shame that they don’t know that there are coffee-specific drinks out there, and the cups that they buy are really just a reflection of what Starbucks is selling, rather than what coffee is good for.”
In a recent study, published in the Journal of Health Psychology, Dr D’ALTON and her colleagues found that the majority of students still preferred to use their coffee in a capper.
“Students tend to think of cappers as just the thing to drink in the afternoon or late at night, but they tend to drink coffee in the morning as well,” Dr D’ton said.
“They’re more likely than non-coffee drinkers to drink their coffee before their first class and after work, and that’s because they’re more accustomed to it.
The majority of the students were also willing to drink a capping cup at work, though this was also down to their familiarity with coffee.”
People tend to be more comfortable with their coffee at home, and they may even prefer to do it there because it’s less likely to get into the way of their day-to-day activities,” Dr J’Alson said.
Dr D’D’ALton said that while the cups might not be the most common choice, they are a great way to try new drinks, and encourage students to think about new drinks and styles they might enjoy in the future.”
For example, it’s very useful to make an experiment in your coffee shop where you’re not sure if you want to try something new,” she said.
The researchers are hoping their study will encourage more students to experiment with coffee, particularly when it comes to new drinks.”
We’re really hoping that this will encourage people to explore their own preferences and make a choice, rather then relying on what they’ve heard or seen,” Dr James said.
